Grease Pencil Pro
Viewport drawing, annotation and 2D-style workflows.
Overview
Grease Pencil Pro is a drawing surface that lives inside the Maya viewport. You draw with a tablet directly over your 3D scene — roughs, mark-ups, or finished 2D linework — and every stroke is real, editable geometry rather than a flat screen overlay. It is built for animators who think in drawings: planning a shot, annotating a playblast, or animating in 2D on twos, without ever leaving Maya.
What it solves
Maya has never had a drawing tool that behaves like one. Hardware lines are uniform, annotation is throwaway, and “2D in 3D” usually means exporting to another application and losing the round-trip. Grease Pencil Pro closes that gap with a real brush engine and a real exposure sheet, in the scene you are already working in.
How it works
- Pick a brush preset and draw over the viewport — tablet pressure sets width, and stroke ends taper like ink.
- Erase by region to carve a drawing back without losing the strokes that already worked.
- Expose drawings on the footer exposure sheet — hold, cycle and shift them the way a 2D animator expects.
- Keep the linework in the scene as editable geometry, or use it purely to plan and mark up a shot.
Grease Pencil Pro concepts
- Ribbon strokes
- Every stroke is a camera-facing triangle strip, not a hardware line — so width, pressure taper, round caps and miter joins behave like a real brush at any thickness.
- The exposure sheet
- A true x-sheet in the footer decides which drawing shows on which frame. Holds, cycles and shifts are first-class, so timing reads the way traditional 2D does.
- Brush presets
- Twelve presets — ink, pencil, marker, paint — carry you from rough planning through finished linework without switching tools.

FAQ
Questions, answered.
Which versions of Maya are supported?
Maya 2022 through 2027, on Windows, macOS and Linux. The Qt shim layer handles PySide2 and PySide6 automatically, so the same install works across versions.
Do I need to be online to use ROM AnimTools?
No. Pro licenses carry a 30-day offline grace period. Your tools keep working on set, on a plane, or behind a studio firewall.
What happens to my files if my subscription lapses?
Nothing. Paid features lock, but your pose libraries, brushes, and drawings are yours and stay on your disk. You fall back to the Starter bundle.
Can I use one license on more than one machine?
Yes — Pro includes seats you can activate and deactivate yourself from your account, so a desktop and a laptop are no problem.
Your next shot is waiting.
Download ROM Starter free, launch it inside Maya, and feel the difference on your very next pose.
